Little Shop Community Read kick off event with Amy Sarig King, author of Attack of the Black Rectangles!

Banned Book Week happens September 18th-24th, but Little Shop is kicking things off early by inviting our community to read Attack of the Black Rectangles by Amy Sarig King with us!

About Attack of the Black Rectangles:

When Mac first opens his classroom copy of Jane Yolen's The Devil’s Arithmetic and finds some words blacked out, he thinks it must be a mistake. But then when he and his friends discover what the missing words are, he's outraged.

Someone in his school is trying to prevent kids from reading the full story.

But who?

Even though his unreliable dad tells him to not get so emotional about a book (or anything else), Mac has been raised by his mom and grandad to call out things that are wrong. He and his friends head to the principal's office to protest the censorship... but her response doesn't take them seriously.

So many adults want Mac to keep his words to himself.

Mac's about to see the power of letting them out.

Why this book?

A timely and necessary book, Attack of the Black Rectangles is a story about censorship, intolerance, and finding one's voice. Attack of the Black Rectangles is a celebration of all that kids are capable of and a good reminder that often they are wiser beyond their young years.

Who can participate?

Anyone, ages 9 and up, who likes to read books, who likes to talk about the books they read, and who knows that banning and censoring books are bad ideas. Ideally, we'd love for Attack of the Black Rectangles to be a family or classroom read, but anyone can join in!

When do we start?

We will kick off our community read of Attack of the Black Rectangles with a special visit with author Amy Sarig King on Sunday, September 11th at 4pm at Little Shop of Stories. At registration, you will be able to pre-order your copy of Attack of the Black Rectangles.

When registering to ATTEND the event on Sunday, September 11th, please be sure to get a ticket for each member in your party so we can ensure a seat for everyone. Please note that masks will be required for the entirety of this event. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding!

What happens next?

At home or at school, we will all read Attack of the Black Rectangles throughout the month of September and reconvene on Friday, October 14th at 5pm for a special book club meeting where we can share our thoughts about the book!*

*Please note: Depending on current Covid case numbers and/or number of participants, this book club meeting may be held on a virtual platform instead of in person.
